The Siberian Forest Cat Breed

The Siberian cat is a captivating and majestic feline breed known for its luxurious, semi-long fur and striking appearance.  Origination from the cold climate of Russia's Siberian region, these cats are well-adapted to cold environments, featuring a dense double coat that helps protect them from harsh weather.  Their fur comes in a variety of colors and patterns, adding to their visual appeal. Siberians are known to get along well with other cats and even dogs! Despite their robust build, Siberian cats possess and elegant and graceful demeanor.  They are recognized for their playful and affectionate nature, often forming strong bonds with their human companions. The Siberian cat is both a delightful and beautiful addition to any household.

Are Siberians Really Hypoallergenic?

Fel d 1 is the most major of the 10 most common cat allergens, causing 80% of human allergies attributed to cats.  We personally have fallen in love with the breed because our family has cat allergies, and we have found these are the only cats with coats (i.e. fur) that we can live with. All of our cats in our breeding program have been tested and produced minimal amounts of Fel d1. If you have a severe allergy, we recommend that you find out your own specific allergen reaction before adopting a Siberian.  Also, we do have a pathway available to have your specific potential kitten tested through the laboratory listed here.

What are the Colors of your Kittens and What About Shedding?

Siberians come in many colors, but generally fall into two groups: “Traditional” or “Neva Masquerade.” We have cats of both color groups in our program. Our primary traditional color options include blue, silver and sunshine colors, but we may also have smoke, golden, or brown with classic or mackerel markings. We have a pair of Flame point Neva masquerade cats we breed annually . As a note, there are many beautiful kittens that are a mix of Neva/Traditional cats; and generally speaking, there is nothing different about these kitten lines in any way other than color.

Siberian cats shed moderately—less than many breeds with a similar coat type. They won't typically leave loads of hair behind after lying on your lap or any other surface. Most of the shedding occurs twice a year: In spring, when they lose extra fur that kept them warm during the winter, and in fall when they lose their summer coat. In winter months more is brushing needed, frequency depends on the cat. In summer time less frequent brushing is generally needed, unless you live in a cold climate. Our kittens will be accustomed to the brush to help them along with coat maintenance.

How do you Maintain Health and Wellness of your Cats and Kittens?

All of our cats and kittens are regularly checked by our excellent veterinary team. The kittens will be microchipped so that they can be identified if lost. The kittens are also de-wormed and vaccinated between 6-8 weeks of age with the first Feline Distemper (FVRCP) vaccine, which protects against three diseases. New owners need to complete this series of vaccines and also get their kitten a rabies vaccination and a FELV vaccination if your kitten will do any adventure time or meet other animals.

We also do the UC Davis genetic health screen for PKD. Note that there is no genetic test for HCM, but we do screen our adult breeding cats for this ailment.
